Legal Aid

Legal Aid

According to the Code of Civil Procedure, individuals may be entitled to legal aid in certain cases, where legal fees are covered by the government. The criteria for legal aid generally require that the individual falls below specific income and asset thresholds, although exceptions to these limits can be made.

Legal aid only covers the costs incurred by the recipient of the aid. This means that if the individual receiving legal aid is ordered to pay the opposing party’s legal costs, those costs are not covered by the state.

For further information about legal aid, please contact the Icelandic Ministry of Justice or visit our office. If you require legal aid, it is important to inform your lawyer at the beginning of the process.
